palay

English. A warm region grass cultivated for its fruit; the unhusked fruit of the plant, rice; gen. for parts of the plant, parts of
the grain and varieties of rice.

Cultural Note. The planting, cultivating, processing, cooking and eating of rice is central to the Subanen culture. A "meal" consists of
eating rice or corn rice. Other staples are considered poor substitute or snack food.
