the grain and varieties of rice.
Subanen. Kig banggala, palay, saging, ma'is, muka' delay, melengas baalen gasi.
English. Cassava, rice, bananas, corn and millet are all good for making wine.
Subanen. Kepanaw nami, su palay ni nga Intung, laak pa guligbesen.
English. When we left, just a very few stalks of Entong's rice were beginning to fruit.
Subanen. Si Tumutung, saba' kesekegen, ki sebakid palay, teknainen laak sedibaluy kemeten.
English. Tumutung was so strong he could carry a sack of unhulled rice in one hand.
Cultural Note. The planting, cultivating, processing, cooking and eating of rice is central to the Subanen culture. A "meal" consists of
eating rice or corn rice. Other staples are considered poor substitute or snack food.
