mag-
to politely refuse something; to feign protest or refusal of something offered, as in refusing to accept food when first offered
it by a host.
Culturally, it is expected that one will protest some courtesy, but if the host or giver presses one to accept the offer or
gift, then the courtesy may be graciously accepted. It is considered poor manners if a person seems too anxious to receive
something. Also, it is incumbent upon the host to offer something to a visitor. Therefore, if the offer is sincere, it is
expected that it will be repeated several times.
Don't you protest now, if you want [it], you want [it] now!
The dress which had been given by me -- oh! She still protested at first, but not long after she was now being [impressed
with its] beauty.
The dress I gave her -- my! She protested at first, but then it wasn't long until she was taken by it. ["Taken" here means
"smitten", or "liked very much".]
