batta
0, mag-, -han
to stay under water; to dive, as in pearl fishing.
This stem is often reduplicated. For Samals, diving refers to staying under the water a long time. This is necessary for getting various kinds of sea creatures. In the past divers would dive for pearls, but the oyster beds are now depleted. This concept of diving does not include diving off high dives.
Magbatta-battahan kam, bang siyan ya batta ma kaam duwangan.
You dive, [so we can see] who dives [the better] between you two.
Si Abdul batta min si Amin.
Abdul dives better than Amin.
