giluy
noun
English. A song sung at a death ceremony (paimala), beklug ceremony, and at ceremony after ill person's recovery (Purpose of song is to comfort the bereaved and appease the spirit
of the departed, asking him not to disturb the living, esp. children. Promise of further sacrifice is often included.)
Example sentence:
Subanen. Si Apu' Asug, sa' sebiin ta, subay sa' beklug da laak, muka' sa' giluy.
English. We can only call Apu' Asug to help us at a beklug ceremony, and by means of the giluy chant.
Example sentence:
Subanen. Laak su ngag duma bebat maa' nu giluy, subay bebaten sa' megbeklug da laak, ndi' mesuat sa' lain pu' geligen da dun dema.
English. But as for other songs like giluy, it must be sung when there is a beklug ceremony happening, it is not not done at other (times), because it has a taboo.
