pam-
1.
verbal prefix, instrument focus; locative or temporal focus prefix.
This prefix, is one of the paN- set, that is, pa- plus the morphophoneme N- , which manifests as m- on stems which begin with p or b . See the discussion in the "Grammar Notes". The first example below illustrates temporal focus, the second and third, instrument. In the third example, the subject becomes the "instrument" of the trait of cordiality because the quality of cordiality characterizes him. That is, when paN- is applied to an action or trait, the idea is that the person or whatever habitually doing the action or expressing the trait becomes the "instrument" or "carrier" of that action or trait.
Lisag dangey bey pamanggahang-na?
What time was he snoring?
Iyan bey pamasanggup-na?
With what did he strike [you]?
What did he use to strike you?
Pamaruli toongan ya.
He is very cordial.
2.
a nominalizing prefix.
This prefix, one of the paN- set, derives a noun from a verb. This derived noun applies to an instrument or location associated with the verb. The derived form frequently adds the +-an/-han suffix. Examples: Pamuwan , "gift" from buwan , "to give"; pameyaan , "conveyance" from beyah , "to go".
3.
a noun prefix which derives a noun from another noun.
An example of this is bulawan , "gold"; and pamulawan , "collection of jewelry".
