In Filipino English, "innocent" is often used, whereas in American English, the word used is "ignorant". For example, an American
would say, "I was ignorant of that fact." But a Filipino would say, "I am innocent of that fact." This is because to the Filipino,
the English term "ignorant" has only negative connotations, but in English it can be used in both ways, i.e. , to denote a simple lack of knowledge without negative connotations, or in the negative sense, to be insulting. An English
example: "I was ignorant of the fact, so I did it innocently." Filipino English: "I was innocent of the fact, so I cannot
be blamed."
