The blade is attached by inserting the blade shank, ūtong, into a hole in the center of the shaft end. A shank collar, lū'up holds the blade tightly onto the shaft. The shank collar extends up to 1 cm. above the top of the shaft. This space between collar and shank is tightly packed with sticky wax, longah, to seal the end of the shaft and blade shank against water.
