2
For someone (actor -um-) to divine something (loc ref i-, -an) by an egg-balancing ritual (inst), for the benefit of someone (benef i-an), as described below.
Iha''ādan: focus is either on 1) that divined, as a spirit, a sickness, the success or failure of an activity such as warfare, or 2) on a person for whose benefit divination is performed.
Any of numerous spirits or spirit classes are called to give an egg-balancing sign, including abuniyan, dumatong and matūngul spirits; place spirits, pinādeng, and spirits of the dead, lennāwa. Liblibāyan and bagāwah spirits are not called for this purpose. When called, they are requested to give a sign for whatever is being divined, by causing an egg to balance on end. The egg itself is also invoked for the same purpose. Usually divination by egg balancing is performed to determine sickness, find out the possibility of success in ritual cane throwing, uggub, warfare, būhul, and the like.
