hālit

A rhythm clapper.
Used when chanting a rhythmic chanted prayer, hālit 2; made of a bamboo tube about thirty centimeters long. The tube is split lengthwise about half way, and the portion of each half near the center is cut away leaving a narrow neck. This results in two tongues which strike against each other to produce a rhythmic clack.

For someone (agent muɴ-; s agent maN-) to offer a rhythmic chanted prayer over a pig (loc ref -on) with the use of a rhythm clapper (inst i-, paN-).

This prayer is offered inside a house over sacrificed pigs during a pāhang ritual or during harvest season, īwang, when pigs are sacrificed and prayers are offered to various spirits. During this chanted prayer, a herb, hangānga, a grass, hanel, and a small taro plant, lā'at, are placed in the mouths of the sacrificial pigs. The taro and herb are later planted and a vigorous stand portends good crops for the family.
