mag-
to greet
by
clasping
hands.
A western-style handshake is usually used for outsiders, or by the younger generation. The traditional Samal way consists
of placing one's hands vertically with the other person's hands in between, right palms touching, left palms touch the backs
of right hands. The hands are slid apart towards oneself, palms together, western prayer-like fashion, the hands then touch
either the forehead or the chest; the head is bowed slightly. If a younger person "shakes" with an older relative, he takes
the right hand of the older person in both his hands, draws it to his nose with head bowed and kisses it by a sniff, not with
the mouth. The same ritual is used for someone seeking forgiveness.
If [it] is the Hari Raya celebration now, [it] takes almost one hour now to greet each other by clasping hands.
