To file teeth (for beautification).
In old times most people had their teeth filed to about half their natural length. The nerve was extracted, sometimes ash was rubbed on as a disinfectant. With some people their teeth caved in. For additional beautification some would blacken their teeth with soot obtained by burning a coconut shell.
