gambil
An ingredient of the betel chew; gambir. (A resinous gum from a Malayan woody vine.)
Uncaria gambir
An astringent substance extracted from the leaves and twigs of a Malayan plant. It is sold in cubes about 2 cm across. The chew becomes more tasty when gambil is added; then it is bitter pa'it-pa'it. Without it, it is bland tebbag. Little bits of the cube are cut off and added to the chew. The chew is smoother than if just a section of betelnut is used. It is used also as medicine and in tanning and dyeing.
