A hand-held mortar, for chopping betel nut mixture with a small pestle, bāyu.
Consists of a tube, typically about 6 - 8 cm. and 2« - 3 cm. in diameter. Formerly made of wood but now commonly a piece of half-inch water pipe crimped or plugged at one end. Some are made of machine-gun shell casings from the second world war.
