Dried arrow-grass canes, bilāu, are bundled and used as a torch to light one's way at night. They are also used for fuel in cooking. They are ideal for cooking large quantities of rice or side-dish food outdoors in a vat, palyu'. They are sometimes used inside a house when wood is not available, but they burn too intensely for cooking small quantities and produce an abundance of ashes.
