A narrow-bladed shovel.
Originally made of a single piece of wood. The blade and handle base, hu'lay 1b, is now made of iron with a wooden handle, pā'aw 2a. Used for spading dried pond-field mud, lūyo'. Present-day use is limited, used mainly by older men; wide-bladed shovels, pāla, are more widely used.

It is made of metal. It consists of a blade and rolled metal handle base into which a handle, pā'aw 2a, is inserted. The blade is about 10 - 15 cm. wide.

Spadework.
Nalīgat nan hu'lay hi tamūan ti umipahigah nan lūyo' an pingpipingpīngon.
Spadework is difficult to work at because the (hard) growing medium to be continuously broken up causes one to become bored.
For someone (agent muɴ; s agent maN-) to spade, soil (patient -on) with a shovel (inst i-, paN-), either narrow-bladed, hu'lay 1, or wide-bladed, pāla.
