One's near blood relative.
Near blood relatives are offspring of grand-aunts and grand-uncles, and siblings of great grandparents and great-great grandparents, along with their offspring. This includes second to fourth cousins and their offspring. Excluded as near relatives are parents, grandparents, great grandparents, etc., uncles and aunts with their offspring, and grand uncles and grand aunts. These excluded relatives are considered nearer in relationship than near blood relatives. Thus, e.g., uncles are considered standby fathers and grand uncles as standby grandfathers, assuming familial responsibilities as fathers and grandfathers respectively if one's father or grandfather dies. The importance of identifying a near relative includes the need to determine those to whom portions of butchered animals, bolwa, are to be given, and those who are ineligible for marriage because of incest taboos.
