Chanted statements typically take the following forms: 1) Jocular banter, hannulan, engaged in especially while guarding a dead person before burial, adāmal, or when men sit around drinking rice beer during ritual prayers, bā'i, or after a work bee, dangah. 2) Matchmaking proposals, chanted by women to young girls and boys in the pond fields while harvesting, īwang, or taking the form of a contest between men and women extolling the virtues of a young boy and girl respectively, engaged in during the post-transplanting holiday season, ulpi. 3) Serious banter, uhpi. This usually begins as jocular banter. It is engaged in during ritual prayers or after a work bee.
