A sieve dam used in dam-fishing, a temporary earth-litter dam to catch falling earth.
A sieve dam, made of grass, holo', along with cane stocks, bilāu, is placed in running water below an area to be fished. It is held in place by dam bracing, dātel, hādel. This allows water but not fish to pass through the dam. See hālop for description. An earth-litter dam is placed temporarily on a slope, below an upland field being worked, to prevent earth litter from falling on a field below.
