A head axe.

The blade is short, wide, with a hook, pawit, at the top edge opposite the blade, pointing backward and curving down. Head axes were used in warfare; they were also occasionally used in clearing a new upland field, ūma, of canes and small trees and to dig stones from cane crowns. They are not currently used in Batad. Parts: axe blade, gaman 1b; blade shank, ūtong; hook, pawit; shank collar, lū'up; handle, pā'aw.
