Reference includes from 1st - 4th cousin, or 5th cousin if referents are poor. Beyond this, the fraternal relationship is said to be exceeded, tālay. The spouse of one's fraternal relative is informally recognized as one's fraternal relative only for the purpose of demonstrating one's affection for him or her. Some important reasons for recognizing a fraternal relationship up to 4th or 5th cousin are as follows: 1) To comply with incest regulations. A rich person may marry a 4th cousin; a poor person, without inheritance of property to consider, will usually not marry nearer than a 5th cousin. 2) For purposes of meat distribution. When one butchers one or more pig(s) or carabao(s), at least a token piece of meat, bolwa, must be distributed to one representative or all relatives to 3rd cousin along with his or her parents, grandparents or children representing separate households; 3) There is an obligation up to 4th or perhaps 5th cousin relationship to help one in need of material assistance, by lending money or barter goods, in matters such as adversity, a fine levied against him or her or to help the person purchase an expensive possession such as a pond field.
