To intentionally throw sand up in the air, to have it be blown by
the wind; to winnow rice by throwing it up in the air so that the
chaff blows away in the wind.
This is done by pouring the rice from one rice receptacle
held high above another. The winnower will whistle to the
wind to come and carry away the husks.
