tapis
n
English Native skirt.
Cultural Note This is made from a two-yard length of 45 inch cloth, seamed to form a tube, and fixed by tucking in a knot. It is highly
versatile, being used also as a sling over one shoulder for carrying babies on the hip, or over the forehead to carry a sick
person on oneś back. It also serves as a blanket, is bundled up to carry belongings, or can be slung as a childś hammock.
It is not considered essential to wear a top with this skirt, but if worn alone, sometimes it is wrapped around under the
armpits instead of around the waist.
