This word appears to be adopted from an old English slang word tomboy . In English, it does not apply to a lesbian, but to a physically active girl, which formerly was considered slightly undesirable
behavior which a girl was expected to grow out of. So now the term, "tomboy" is falling out of favor in American culture,
perhaps because athletic ability is now encouraged and admired in both men and women, and because of the current emphasis
on women and girls having equal opportunities in all fields, including sports.
