the name of the main island of the Sibutuh group.
Sibutuh is said to be named after the butun trees which are plentiful in the area. Sibutuh Island is only about six degrees north of the equator and has a hot and humid
climate. It includes several barrios, and the population is estimated at 40,000. Most of the people live on the west side
of the banana shaped coral island. The island is about seventeen miles long and not quite three miles at its widest point.
It has one hill in the center, and a fresh water pool Kaban-kaban . It also has an air strip built by Notre Dame Catholic
Oblate Priests, and a wharf, built by Americans, and two high schools, one public, and one private Notre Dame . There are
a few monkeys in the middle of the island. There is a Philippine Air Force contingency near the air strip which is in Sibutuh
Proper.
