pattah
picture; photograph.
1.
N-, -an
to take a photograph; to draw a picture.
Although Samals enjoy comics which feature pictures, when Samal children draw pictures, they do not draw humans or animals. Mostly they draw boats and houses and flowers. Perhaps this is because of Islam's restrictions on representational art work. Also, when taking a photograph, odd numbers of people in the photograph are avoided, for fear one of the people photographed will die if there is an odd number. This is especially true of three people in a photo. To avoid three people in a picture, one of the three will either decline to be photographed, or another will be invited to join, making it four for the photo.
Piitu kam magpattah.
You come here [for] picture taking.
Come here to have your picture taken.
2.
eh, ni-
to be photographed.
Eh ku mattah kow sinabu lumangi.
You were photographed by me while swimming.
I took your picture while you were swimming.
