‘mat’ the plain woven bottom layer of a native mat.
A woven mat tepo , has two parts: The lapis , which is the simply woven bottom layer, and the isi which is the smaller top layer. The top layer is woven with finer thinner strips of pandanus which have been dyed. Intricate patterns are woven into this top layer.
