The Kaaba , located in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, is a fifty foot cube structure which houses a meteorite called "the black stone". When
Islam's founder, Prophet Muhammad, cleansed the Kaaba of its many statues and relics, he left only the meteorite. Prior to the founding of Islam early in the seventh century,
the stone was used as an object of worship some scholars say of Artemis. Muslim pilgrims to the shrine encircle it seven times
during the annual haj .
