baung
‘utensils’ coconut shell.
The coconut shell has many uses. It is used as a dipper. When holes are drilled, the half shell is used as a sieve, as used in making ja . Of ethnological interest is the use of coconut shells to bury the placenta. The shell is filled with a bit of sand, like a small grave. Then a washed placenta is placed inside and covered with more sand. A white cloth is placed on top of this and then the top of the coconut shell is replaced. The baung is then inverted and buried in the ground. Samals believe it is necessary for the good of the newborn, that the placenta be buried.
