To allow plowed soil to dry before harrowing.
Bangdal is done during the Feb.-Mar. planting season. Feb. and Mar. is during dry season so the soil can dry. The other planting time is Aug.-Sept. during the rainy season. Kintoman, a variety of red rice, is planted in Feb.-Mar. If the soil is allowed to dry before harrowing, the rice plants produce more shoots. If the soil is not dried, a rice plant will produce only 2 or 3 shoots. [PC 9.1.88] This apparently allows the nitrogen to be replenished in the soil. [DB 1.16.07] Allowing the soil to dry out also kills snail and parasites that live in wet rice fields. [DB 1.16.07]
To harrow.
