The old woman tied a leg band on her son so that a snake would not bite him.
Leg bands were worn by Karao men in the old days. They were tied just below the knee. Anything could be used for a leg band, e.g. rattan, wire, string. The ends of the leg bands were tucked into the band. There is a story that a Karao man found a snake that had been badly burned in a forest fire. As it was dying, the snake asked the man to bury it carefully when it was dead. If the man would do this for the snake, then the snake, who was the king of the snakes, would tell all the other snakes never to bite a Karao. The snake told the man to have all the Karao men wear leg bands so that the snakes would be able to recognize the Karao men when they saw them and not bite them. Tradition has it that no Karao has ever died of a snake bite.
