niyawa
Soul, spirit, life principle.
All living things (humans, animals, plants) are said to have niyawa. If a person is dead his niyawa has left; if sleeping his niyawalihan may wander about; if very frightened, unresponsive, or sick the umāgad has left or been taken by spirits. At death the niyawa leaves, the umāgad may still be around the house for a while (some say for about seven days).
Bang matey ne a'ahin tahala' ne niyawanen.
When a person has died his soul has left.
