There are several kinds. Some have many lacy branches and grow in the deep sea like the black peacock tail gorgonian. Another one looks like a leafless shrub. The most common one is the black whip coral which grows like a long rod without branches.
Bracelets, earrings and rings are fashioned from it, often covered with gold.
