A sermon. Reading of the ‘scroll’ (at the end of the months of Ramadan and Hadji').
The reading is from a scroll that contains copied portions of a book called kitab ma'aripatul iman or portions from the Qur’an. The imam stands and holds a sword barung in his right hand, points it upwards and recites from the scroll. Imams who follow the old customs chant the content of the scroll. It is in Arabic. Ustads give an explanation of the contents being read. They don’t chant but just read. During the months of Puwase and Hadji' there is a sermon hutba' every Friday reportedly from the kitab ma'aripatul iman. But the important reading of the scroll matsa hutba' always talked about and particularly festive is at the end of Ramadan. The sermons on ordinary Fridays are often called hutba' as well.
At the end of the months of Ramadan and Hadji' the imam reads the scroll in the prayer house.
