Bundles of harvested rice can be beaten against something or placed in a wooden trough (an old canoe) and massaged between the feet so the grains fall off. It is taboo to use the hands or to breathe on the rice, as a storm will come to destroy it; rice dust must not be blown off one's hands while working.
