A sugarcane plant, Saccarum officinarum [Gram.]; a sugarcane stalk.
Grows chiefly in upland fields, ūma. Varieties: bannōlan, bānoy, bata'ong, buyadyaw, kawīlan, gallītan. Sugarcane has three main uses: 1) A piece of the stalk is peeled and chewed raw, ōoh, to extract the juice to quench thirst or hunger. 2) Stalks are put through a sugarcane press, apalan, balīwoh, hewagan, pewot 2, and the resulting juice is added to rice beer, hubul, to sweeten it or to increase the volume. 3) The juice is boiled down and the resulting sugar blocks, inti, are used as a side dish, mihda, to be eaten with rice or sweet potatoes, eaten as a confectionery, or used as a rice beer sweetener.
