1
A hand loom for weaving articles made of fabric, obol.
A loom consists of the following parts, listed in order from the weaver to the loom back: weaver's belt, gawelan; waist template, ipītan; shuttle, hi'ītan; beater stick, balīga; heddle stick, ginulun; leash stick, tubungan; warp spacing stick, leneppot; back warp stick, hapayan. Warp thread is placed or wound onto the loom forming the shape of a continuous belt with upper and lower portions. The length and width of the belt is determined by the purpose of the fabric being woven. The loom parts are positioned transversely, being inserted either into selected threads of the upper portion of the warp or tied to them. As weaving progresses, the upper portion is rotated towards the weaver; thus the fabric passes to the lower portion of the warp, eventually passing up over the back warp stick and towards the weaver on the upper portion of the warp.
