Omens are signalled by birds, as an owl, hī'ot, falcon pu'tīaw, omen birds, īdaw, and various insects, see Appendix 25, Omens. Seasons are signalled by seasonal features of plants, birds, weather, see Appendix 5, Calendar of Rice Agriculture in Batad. Rice-harvest-completion holiday, tūngaw, is signalled by stick people, kinnāhu, placed along trails leading to areas outside the village. Death of a spouse is signalled by the wearing of mourning articles, bālu. Crops and property are protected against theft by taboo markers, pūdung.
