While pounding rice in a mortar in preparation for a feast for a dead person, bū'al, the one pounding occasionally beats on the edge of the mortar with a pestle at intervals during the pounding, or, if two are pounding, they pound in a rhythm as described under pagīpag. This is done when the skeletal remains of a revered dead person are brought out for religious ceremonies, bū'a, or when a person dies in old age.
