If a married man has relations with a single, divorced or widowed woman, and if the relationship is generally known, causing shame to the woman's parents, the man must pay an adultery fine. In some places, even unmarried, widowed or divorced men are required to pay this fine if conditions are, as described above, and the man does not marry the woman. A separate fine is imposed in consideration of the adulteress's children living with her, ākang, and in consideration of her husband, gībuh. Adultery fine payments, as described above, are identical to these paid in consideration of an adulteress's children, ākang, q.v. Appendix 24. If a single, divorced or widowed woman becomes pregnant as a result of the sexual relationship, this fine is not imposed; instead the man must pay an engagement bride-wealth payment, bongbong, and a marriage bride-wealth payment, ālun. These payments are considered a fine, and does not afford the man any sexual privileges with the woman.
