A betel masticatory, consisting of betel fruit, leaf of the betel vine, hapid, lime, āpul, and optionally tobacco, tabā'u.
This masticatory, when mixed with saliva, is a mild stimulant. It is an important social aid, contributing to social intercourse among members of the same or opposite sex. It is also of importance as a ritual aid, especially during the hagawhaw and opah rituals, and at harvest time during the bumughe ritual.
