A mortar is either carved from wood, or chiseled from stone. It is used for pounding, bāyu, to hull and crush grains and beans such as coffee, kapi, maize, kahhīlang, millet, habug, rice, bogah, sorghum, gal'ung. It is also used to mash tubers in preparation for making food dishes, such as sweet potatoes, lapnay, manioc, kāhuy, taro, tugmuy.
