For someone (actor -um-; s actor maN-) to violate a holiday, ngilin (patient -on), by disobeying a prohibition, imposed by the particular holiday, as by working or passing through a field.
hiwa'īlon; manewā'el
Violating a holiday was traditionally a serious offence, since it negated the benefits of the holiday, requiring a repetition of the holiday, including ritual prayers and sacrificing animals and chickens. For local offenders, a fine requiring them to provide pigs, chickens and rice beer for repeating the ceremonies was imposed. Visitors from villages at war with the local villages were often killed in times past for the violation of a holiday.
