A whip ritual, performed to counteract malign power, pāliw.
Two green arrow-grass canes, bilāu, about a meter long, are held in a fire by a ritualist, mumbā'i. He prays that the malign power directed against his patient be dispelled and turned back on the one using it. If the canes crack or spit loudly, this indicates that the prayer is received favorably. This is usually the first attempt to counteract malign power. If this does not succeed, udyad 2 prayers are recited.
