A first post-marriage bride-wealth payment, given the parents of a woman, usually following the marriage, as part of a first, second or third class set of bride-wealth payments.
Payment is about three-quarters the value of the marriage bride-wealth payment, ālun, ranging in size from a medium-to-large pig, mahindālan, to a medium pig, ma'empātan, depending on the bride-wealth classification. Parents of the woman pressure the payment of this as well as second and third post-marriage bride-wealth payments, namangūlu, hognad, before a pregnancy bless-offering ritual for the first child of the couple, ballu'ung. This is because, with the coming of the first child, all available resources of the husband and his parents will be directed to the couple's children, and post-marriage bride-wealth payments will be neglected.
