An engagement bride-wealth payment of chickens, given by a man as the initial bride-wealth payment, madāwat.
Consists of from four pairs of large chickens, nuntemam, plus a large hen, pud'ul, to one pair of one large and one small chicken, nunhagībi, plus a large hen, depending on the class of bride-wealth payment. One pair must be given to establish the engagement; others are given as requested by the bride's family. This payment is a seal to a marriage agreement. It is also given by a man to the parents of a widow with children living with her, who becomes pregnant as a result of his sexual relations with her. He also pays her parents a marriage bride-wealth payment, ālun. If the woman does not become pregnant as a result of his relations with her, he pays her parents an adultery fine, numbaīnan.
