Canes are an important commodity. The following are among the uses: fencing, lūhud; fuel for fire, mitungu, pāul; roof construction: purlins, ībat; rafters, tuldug; thatch clamps, hīpit; sleeping mat, ātag; walls of a hut, deplat; ritual marker, pūdung.

A caneland area, predominantly of arrow grass, bilāu.
Arrow grass stands are found in areas of fertile soil; plants are often as long as 4 m., in heavy, bending stands; an ideal area for making an upland field, ūma.
