bā'ag1
A bundled human skeleton, wrapped in grave clothes.
The term applies to the rewrapped skeletal remains of one who has been brought out of a burial cave after a period of several months to allow for the decomposition of the flesh. Before bringing out, the remnants of the original death blanket, empat, are removed and the skeleton, if a female, is customarily wrapped in a white woven skirt and tied together with a loincloth. If male, it is wrapped in a blanket and tied together with a loincloth. It is believed that dead relatives afflict the living with sickness; thus the skeletal remains are brought out to offer animal sacrifice to his or her spirit and to appeal to him or her to remove the sickness of one for whom the ritual is being performed.
