ami
We exclusive.
ami or any topic pronoun may be expanded by a modifying word or phrase introduced by an (or variant -n).
Immuy amin linalā'i.
We men went.
A topic pronoun or pronoun phrase occurs as a topic as follows: 1) When the sentence comment head is a verb. The topic pronoun a) precedes the main verb, following words such as adi `will not'; agguy `did not'; un `just'; pseudo-verb ay2 or umuy.
Adi ami muntāmud ugwan ti un ami tummung.
We (ex) will not work today because we will just stay at home.
b) Immediately follows the verb.
Munhihīlaw ami ti ten helong.
We (ex) will carry a light because it is dark.
When an agent or actor of the verb action occurs, however, a topic pronoun (except for -a') does not occur. Instead, a full pronoun immediately follows the verb and the agent or actor occurs as a referent following the pronoun (see da'mi).
Inyappōhan da'mih nan binabāi.
We were chanted to by the women.
2) When the sentence comment head is an adjective, the pronoun topic immediately precedes or follows the adjective as described for verbs under 1).
Adīa' ho'ho'dod ad ugwan ti ten immata'nānga'.
I am not short now because you see I have become tall.
Ho'ho'dod ami ti ho'ho'dod goh di ommodmi.
We (ex) are short because our parents are short.
3) When the sentence comment is a noun or noun phrase, the pronoun topic may a) precede, following a negative; i.e., bo'on `not'.
Bo'on ami ommod ten ung'ungnga.
We (ex) are not the parents of this child;
b) follow the noun.
Ipugaw ami.
We (ex) are Ifugaos;
4) When the sentence comment head is a demonstrative locative hidi `there, far'; hina `there' hitu `here' the pronoun topic immediately follows.
Hitu ami an agguy ami nakak.
We (ex) are here, we have not left.
