agāwit
For someone (agent -um- & loc ref; s agent maN- & loc ref) to adopt someone (theme -on).
Immagāwit da Piku an himbaluy hi ung'ungnga ti mid imbaluyda.
Piku and his wife adopted a child because they had no children.
Usually a child about two months old is adopted. Typically the source of adoption is a near relative to minimize inheritance disputes by natural-born relatives of the child. More recently children from far places such as Manila are also adopted. This is acceptable since there is little danger of claims being made by relatives of the child claiming inheritance. An important motivation for adopting is to provide for someone to care for the couple in old age and after death.
