A type of fan palm tree, spelled buri in Tagalog as well as in
English.
These trees grow to be very large. They have very tall trunks and
fan-like leaves or fronds. The leaves are dried in the sun and then
split into strips and rolled into bundles. The dried strips are used
for weaving baskets, mats for drying rice, hats, etc. The midribs
can be used in sewing palm shingles together. The tall, mature
trees can also be used for gathering teba, native wine.
